Dickerson Generating Station Outage
In 2008 PMSI completed Dickerson Station’s D3 Fall Winter Prep Outage. The project consisted of the removal of existing tangent waterwall tube sections. Removal of lower furnace slope tubes, north furnace tubes, south furnace tubes, side wall panels outer casing, inner casing and test ports.
Replacements consisted of SNCR injection port panels, lower furnace slope tube Dutchmen (north and south furnace) and extended sidewall panels.
The work called for 193 tube welds in numerous locations. PMSI was awarded the project just two days prior to the unit going off line. Within 48 hours, PMSI had 43 skilled craft personnel on site working. The project was a nine day outage with approximately 200 tangent tube welds.
Following asbestos abatement and scaffolding completion, PMSI had 5 days to complete the outage. This outage was particularly difficult due to the age of the unit, being small bore (1 ½ OD) tangent tubing and being support welded at every possible elevation.
PMSI met all scheduling requirements with a perfect safety record and only one minor leak during hydro.
Dickerson staff noted during post outage review of PMSI’s performance that the quality and production of the craft personnel PMSI brought to the site was excellent. PMSI boilermakers, tube prep journeymen and tube welders performed exceptionally.

AES – Huntington Beach Generating Station. In 2002, PMSI was selected by AES as prime contractor to redesign and replace two super-critical steam generators and rebuild two 225-megawatt cross-compound high pressure turbine generator units simultaneously. In addition, all of the auxiliary equipment and systems were upgraded or replaced with the latest technology. The latest state-of-the-art NOx and CO emission systems were installed. The Control System was replaced by installing a new central distribution control system, including new steam turbine generator controls.
On this project PMSI expended 929,111 man-hours during a 16 month construction schedule, at times operating 2 shifts a day, employing 735 men at the peak phase with another 270 subcontractors totaling over 1000 men.
